Case Discussion

Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis (i.e. guided growth) is an effective and popular treatment method for correction of the pediatric lower limb angular deformity in which tension-band plates (also called guided growth plates) are applied to a crooked bone to gradually straighten it as a child or adolescent grows. It takes 6 to 12 months before the bone fully straightens; sometimes the tension-band plate may need to remain in place for a year. After the correction is achieved, the tension-band plate is removed during a second, outpatient surgical procedure. The most commonly used tension-band plates are the eight-plate and the peanut plate.
