Unilateral masticatory muscles atrophy

Presentation

Previous history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 24-year-old
Gender: Female

Encephalomalacia areas in both frontal lobes, markedly on the left, are consistent with the areas of previous cerebral contusions when correlated with previous imaging. A few high T2 signal abnormalities scattered in the white matter in the left cerebral hemisphere correlated also with previous contusions. 

Atrophy and fat replacement of the right temporalis, masseter and pterygoids muscles. 

Case Discussion

This case illustrates a presumed post-traumatic right trigeminal motor neuropathy. The features were not present on the brain images at the moment of trauma more than one year ago.
