Diffuse T1 bone marrow signal loss
Updates to Article Attributes
Body
was changed:
Diffuse T1 vertebral bone marrow signal loss is associated with replacement of fatty marrow by oedema or cellular tissue.
Radiographic features
MRI
T1-weighted imaging without fat suppression is one of the most important sequences for distinguishing between normal and abnormal bone marrow. Abnormal bone marrow is iso- or hypo-intense to skeletal marrow 3. In the case of homogeneous involvement, this appearance can often be difficult to spot as abnormal.
Differential diagnosis
- bone marrow hyperplasia
- myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative diseases
- myelofibrosis
- diffusebone metastases
- iron deposition related pathologies, e.g. haemochromatosis
- sarcoidosis
- spondyloarthropathy
- renal osteodystrophy
- gout
- gelatinous marrow conversion
