Interparietal hernia

Last revised by Joachim Feger on 20 May 2023

Interparietal hernias, also known as interstitial hernias (alternative plural: herniae) are a general category of ventral abdominal wall hernias, defined by the occurrence of the hernia sac located between the layers of the anterior abdominal wall 1-4. They are commonly incisional hernias and most Spigelian hernias are of this type.

Rectus sheath hernias are a subtype of the interparietal hernias.

History and etymology

Interparietal hernias were first described by the Danish physician, mathematician and theologian Thomas Bartholin in 1661 4,5.
