The lung hila or roots are found on the medial aspect of each lung. The left and right lung roots are similar but not identical. The roots of the lung lie between T5 to T7 vertebrae 5.

Gross anatomy

Left hilum

In theThe left hilum the left pulmonary artery occupies the upper part. Below this is the left main bronchus. There are two pulmonary veins, one lies in front, and the other lies below the arch of the aorta and anterior to the descending aorta. The left main bronchus lies in the front part of the hilum, followed by left pulmonary veins and left pulmonary artery 5.

Right hilum

In theThe right hilum lies below the bronchusarch of the upper lobe and the branch of the right pulmonary arteryazygous vein, posterior to the upper lobe originate prior to entering the hilum. Thus, the upper lobe bronchussuperior vena cava and artery are found above the level of the right main bronchus and right pulmonary arteryatrium. The arteries lie in front of their respective bronchi. The twoRight pulmonary veins are similar to thatlocated at the anterior part of the left sidehilum, one in frontfollowed by right pulmonary arteries, and one below the right main bronchuslobar bronchi 5.

The structures of the lung hilum are enclosed in a sleeve of pleura continuous below with the pulmonary ligament5.

In addition to the structures described above, each root contains bronchial vessels, autonomic nerves, lymph nodes, and lymphatic channels.
