Squamocolumnar junction of cervix

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 18 Apr 2024

The squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) of the cervix refers to a transitional area between squamous epithelium of the vagina and the columnar epithelium of the endocervix. This shifts in location through age from being more external to internal. Carcinoma of the cervix develops almost exclusively within the transformation zone that extends between the original squamocolumnar junction and the physiological squamocolumnar junction 1.
