Stroke is a clinical diagnosis that refers to a sudden onset focal neurological deficit of presumed vascular origin.
It is divided into two broad categories:
- ischaemic stroke (80% 2)
- haemorrhagic stroke (15%)
Haemorrhage may be due to hypertension or other secondary causes such as vascular malformations.
Other causes of stroke-like symptoms include subarachnoid haemorrhage and tumours (via intra-tumouralintratumoural haemorrhage or secondary seizures).
