Presentation
Abnormal right kidney on antenatal ultrasound exam.
Patient Data
The right kidney shows multiple non-communicating cysts of varying sizes and shapes replacing the entire renal parenchyma with intercystic echogenic areas representing most likely fibrous parenchyma.
The left kidney shows a normal appearance.
Case Discussion
Ultrasound features typical of a right unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK).
Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a type of non-heritable pediatric cystic renal disease. It results in multiple cysts being formed in utero in the affected kidney. The diagnosis is often made either antenatally or in the early neonatal period if an ultrasound is performed (as in this case).
