Volar plate avulsion injury

Presentation

Hand trauma with ongoing pain.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Avulsion fracture of the base of the middle phalanx of the fourth digit along the volar aspect consistent with a volar plate injury. No other fractures.

Case Discussion

This patient had a history of fourth interphalangeal joint dislocation and subsequent relocation. 

Volar plate injuries may be bony (as above) or may be confined to the soft tissues, and in this case ultrasound or MRI are preferred.
