Presentation
Right shoulder pain and limited movement
Patient Data
MRI study shows signal alteration of the infraspinatus tendon with associated edema of the musculotendinous junction, peri tendinous fluid, and small lesions of low signal in all pulse sequences likely calcific foci
Mild acromioclavicular joint osteoarthritic changes
Mildly thickened supraspinatus tendon shows mild intra-substance signal changes (intermediate in T1 and T2) suggestive of mild tendinopathy
Mild fluid in the subacromial / subdeltoid bursa
The CT study confirms the presence of calcific foci related to the infraspinatus tendon
Case Discussion
Here is a case of calcific tendinitis of the infraspinatus tendon that is relatively uncommon.
This incidence of calcific tendinitis affects the rotator cuff of the shoulder as follows:
- supraspinatus: 80%
- infraspinatus: 15%
- subscapularis: 5%
