Presentation

Squash player with chronic posterior ankle pain.

Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Male

The Achilles tendon is diffusely thickened at its midportion showing a small interstitial tear eliciting a high signal on STIR. No complete tear or rupture.

Normal MRI signal of the deltoid ligament and lateral collateral complex ligaments.

Normal MRI signal of the flexor and extensor tendons.

Mild ankle joint effusion.

Achilles tendinopathy refers to a combination of pathological changes affecting the Achilles tendon usually due to overuse and excessive chronic stress upon the tendon. It can be seen both in athletes and non-athletes. It may or may not be associated with an Achilles tendon tear
