Achilles tendon tear

Case contributed by Ana Castell
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Intense heel/posterior lower leg pain while playing basketball. Edema and a positive Thompson's sign on examination.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Thickened left Achilles tendon, identifying a full-thickness discontinuity ±5 cm from its distal insertion. The distal end is partially retracted.

The distance between both ends is approximately 2 cm, where a small heterogeneous collection compatible with hematoma is identified.

Diagnostic findings indicate a complete rupture of the left Achilles tendon.

Case Discussion

Characteristic sonographic findings of an Achilles tendon rupture. The patient underwent laparoscopic surgery, confirming the findings and approximating both ends.
