Suspicious lesion noted on CT abdomen, with mesoappendiceal stranding at the tip of the appendix and normal proximal appendix.

Case Discussion

An appendiceal lesion suspicious for an appendiceal mucocele was incidentally imaged on a CT abdomen performed to assess an umbilical hernia further. The patient was asymptomatic at the time of imaging.

The patient proceeded to have an uncomplicated laparoscopic appendectomy. Histopathology revealed an appendix with a serrated lesion at the tip forming a diverticulum with mucin extravasation, inflammation and mesoappendiceal fat necrosis. Importantly, there was no evidence of invasive malignancy.
