Presentation

Foreign body sensation in the right internal auditory canal.

Patient Data

Age: 16 years
Gender: Male

The right mandibular condyle is bifid with two condyle heads separated by a central notch. The medial condyle head shows a relatively normal appearance and the lateral condyle head is deformed and flattened.

Normal appearance of the internal auditory canals with no foreign body seen.

Normal pneumatisation of the mastoid air cells.

Normal appearance of the middle and inner ears.

Case Discussion

Bifid mandibular condyle is an extremely rare condition, characterised by a duplication of the condylar process on two condyle heads 1,2. It is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally 1,2. It is considered a developmental abnormality 1,2.
