Pain without history of trauma.

AP and lateral knee radiographs in an adult male. A bony fragment is seen at the lateral aspects of both patellas, corresponding to a bilateral bipartite patella type II.

Case Discussion

Bipartite patella is often an incidental finding and is a normal variant of the development of ossification in approximately 0.2% to 6.0% of the general population. Patients might present with knee pain or instability in less than 2% of the cases. Bipartite patella is mainly seen in males, and the incidence of bilateral bipartite patella varies from 25% to 83% 1.
