Cervical disc extrusion

Presentation

Neck pain and right upper limb numbness.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
mri

C5-6 right posterolateral disc herniation with subligamentous extension and caudal migration in keeping with disc extrusion. It is indenting the right anterolateral aspect of spinal cord with mild spinal canal stenosis and encroaching upon right C6 exiting nerve root.

x-ray

The patient was treated surgically with discectomy with the placement of PEEK cervical cage fusion (frontal, lateral).

Case Discussion

Disc extrusion is diagnosed when there is annular tear and expulsion of disc material with a narrow neck but preserved connection with the parent disc, usually with caudal or cranial migration. It is more common in lumbar disc herniations than in cervical ones.
