History of caustic ingestion about one month ago, followed by dysphagia and odynophagia.
Patient Data
A long-segment stricture with tapering is present in the mid-oesophagus, typical for caustic ingestion stricture.
The visualised stomach and duodenum appear normal.
Case Discussion
This case demonstrates the typical fluoroscopic appearance of chronic corrosive oesophageal stricture, including long-segment stricture with tapering margins.
Oesophageal perforation and increased incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the affected segment are the main complications.
It should be noted that barium contrast can be used in the chronic stage (after 21 days) of corrosive oesophagitis, and often, there is a single long stricture with tapering involving the middle and lower oesophagus. In acute and subacute stages, it's better to use a water-soluble contrast medium, and findings may include mucosal oedema, ulceration and sloughing of the mucosa with oesophageal dilatation and atony.
