Presentation

History of hit by heavy object yesterday at work, on clinical examination: tenderness left middle and index fingers.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

• Comminuted fracture at the distal phalanx of the left middle finger 

• Soft tissue shadows appear mildly swollen.

Case Discussion

  • Phalangeal fractures result from direct trauma (hammer-heavy object)or catching a finger in a closing door, or the toe is crushed between two rigid bodies.
  • Distal phalanx fractures are often accompanied by injury to the nail bed, nail avulsion, or subungual haematoma.
