Presentation
Right ankle pain and swelling following inversion injury.
Patient Data
Swelling anterior to the right ankle with extensive soft tissue calcification.
Review of previous imaging, revealed a previous presentation to A&E with a left hand injury.
There is a large focus of dystrophic calcification projected over the dorsal aspect of the hand at the junction of the base of the 3rd and 4th metacarpals.
Case Discussion
There is marked soft tissue swelling anterior to (and outside) the ankle joint with extensive soft tissue calcification.
Features here are of dystrophic calcification, the cause of which was initially unclear. Subsequent investigation revealed hyperparathyroidism and abnormal calcium metabolism.
