Encrusted ureteric stent in patient with bilateral PUJ obstruction

Presentation
Known for obstructive uropathy. A double J ureteric stent was placed on the right 5 years ago and was not removed for unknown reasons.

The CTU demonstrates:
- right kidney shows hydronephrosis, dilated and ballooned renal pelvis suggestive of pelviureteric junction obstruction. Decreased thickness of the cortical renal parenchyma with delayed excretion. Double J ureteric stent
- left kidney shows hydronephrosis with dilated, ballooned renal pelvis and collapsed ureter in keeping with a pelviureteric junction obstruction. Three renal stones are noted one in the renal pelvis and two in the lower calyx
- urinary bladder: marked calcification around the distal tip of the ureteric stent in keeping with encrusted ureteric stent
Case Discussion
CTU features an encrusted ureteric stent in a patient with bilateral pelviureteric junction obstruction and left renal stones.
Ureteric stents encrustation is considered a common complication following ureteric stent placement that can prone patients to renal damage especially when they have been left for a long period.
Three monthly exchange of double J ureteral stents is well established to prevent encrustation.
