Presentation
Known case of systemic lupus erythematosus, preasented with headache.
Patient Data
There is extensive bilateral symmetrical calcification seen in the basal ganglia involving the lentiform nucleus, caudate, medial thalami, midbrain, pons and both cerebral hemispheres extending to the centrum semiovale and cerebellar hemispheres involving the dentate nuclei.
Case Discussion
Fahr syndrome is characterized by abnormal vascular calcium deposition, particularly in the basal ganglia, cerebellar dentate nuclei, and white matter, with subsequent atrophy.
It can be either primary or secondary to a large number of underlying illnesses where it called Fahr disease or secondary to metabolic disturbances, as in this case it is associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, where it called Fahr syndrome.
