Presentation

Drainage of amniotic fluid at 36 weeks gestation.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Extensively dilated bowel loops with echogenic contents within the lumen. Visible plicae circulares within the bowel loops, in keeping with small bowel obstruction.

Amniotic fluid was adequate. Amniotic fluid index (AFI) is 14 centimeters.

No other fetal anomaly was seen.

Case Discussion

Imaging features of fetal bowel obstruction.

Post natal abdominal x-ray findings were reported as loop of dilated bowel in the central lower abdomen with gaseous distension of the stomach and first part of the duodenum noted. The conclusion was duodenal and distal small bowel obstruction likely secondary to peritoneal (Ladd) bands.
