Foreign body - knee

Presentation

Thorn injury to knee 4 weeks back. Complaining of increasing knee swelling and movement restriction.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

There is lobulated collection posterior to the posterior cruciate ligament. There is a linear focus with two parallel echogenic line and central lucency; measuring 2 mm in length - Foreign body (thorn fragment ).

There is suprapatellar effusion with synovial thickening.

Case Discussion

Patient presented with knee swelling and restricted movements after thorn injury about 4 wks back. MRI was performed which revealed synovitis with collection abutting posterior cruciate ligament.  

Ultrasound was requested to look for any foreign body which was present in collection.

Surgery revealed synovitis. A thorn fragment was removed.
