Presentation
Foreign body ingestion 1 day ago, mild dyspnoea after ingestion and regurgitation during the examination.
Patient Data
A metallic artefact (open safety pin) in the centre of the neck represents a foreign body ingestion that has remain lodged in the hypopharynx.
Case Discussion
A swallowed foreign body can remain physically asymptomatic, or patients can feel a foreign-body sensation.
An ENT specialist may refer the patient for imaging to confirm the presence and location of the foreign body, in addition to any additional pathology that may have occurred due to the ingestion (i.e. oesophageal perforation, subcutaneous emphysema).
