Foreign body within right main bronchus - infant

Presentation

Presented with breathlessness and cough of 1 day duration.

Patient Data

Age: 8 months
Gender: Male

Plain CT images in lung window demonstrate hypo-attenuating right lung with mild increase in right lung volume as evidenced by leftward shift of anterior junctional line- representing air trapping.

A crescent shaped soft tissue density structure was seen in right main bronchus causing airway obstruction - consistent with foreign body. 

Case Discussion

8 month old male child presented to pediatrician with complaints of breathlessness and cough of one day duration. Child was advised CT chest to rule out foreign body.

CT chest showed soft tissue density foreign body in distal right main bronchus causing air trapping in entire right lung. 

Child underwent bronchoscopy and retrieval of the intrabronchial foreign body. The crescent shaped foreign body was "areca nut".
