Gastro-oesophageal reflux post sleeve gastrectomy

Presentation

Sleeve gastrectomy 18 months prior. 6 months of reflux symptoms.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Double-contrast barium swallow

Fluoroscopy

Status post sleeve gastrectomy with a reduced volume tubular stomach. No stricture. No hiatus hernia. On water siphon test, there is free gastro-oesophageal reflux. 

Case Discussion

Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a late complication of sleeve gastrectomy, it can arise de novo or can be an exacerbation of existing symptoms. Some patients with GORD may experience an improvement in symptoms after a sleeve gastrectomy.
