Presentation
Superficial swelling of the left frontal region, progressively increasing in size since birth.
Patient Data
Well-defined subcutaneous soft tissue mass (measuring 32 x 26 x 12 mm) of the left frontal paramedian region of intermediate signal on T1, high signal on T2 and FLAIR with internal flow void vascular structures and vivid homogeneous enhancement on post-contrast sequences. The adjacent external table of the skull is intact with no intracranial extension.
Case Discussion
MRI features most consistent with an infantile hemangioma of the scalp.
Infantile hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors, most commonly found in the head and neck regions. Usually small or absent at birth and progressively increasing in size during the first year of life followed by a stationary period, then progressive involution during early childhood. Up to 50% involute by 5 years and 70% by the age of 7 years.
