Major trauma. Primary retrieval.

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

No fracture identified. Alignment is normal. Intraosseous access needle noted in the humeral head.

Case Discussion

Intraosseous (IO) access is often used in trauma and shocked patients when intravenous (IV) access is difficult or delayed. The device is a hollow metallic bore needle inserted on a preloaded drill. The major benefit is the speed in which it can be placed and fluids commenced.
