Presentation
5 days of left-sided facial oedema and erythema with a surgical history of bilateral malar augmentation.
Patient Data
CT scan showing left facial swelling, oedema, and abscess. There is bony erosion due to osteomyelitis causing the malar implant to penetrate the left maxillary sinus and abut the lamina papyracea.
Case Discussion
This case highlights an infected malar implant complicated by bony erosion and penetration into the maxillary sinus. Complications related to malar augmentation are relatively uncommon. Common complications of malar augmentation include asymmetry, displeasing contours, haematoma, infection, implant migration, extrusion, and nerve damage 1. Often, complications of malar augmentation do not show any imaging findings 2.
