Presentation

Recurrent chest infections. The chest x-ray is not available.

Patient Data

Age: 1 year
Gender: Female

The scout views show a bowel loop projecting over the heart shadow on the frontal view and in the anterior mediastinum on the lateral view with a poor delineation of the adjacent diaphragm.

CT scan confirms the presence of an anteromedial defect of the diaphragm containing non-obstructed transverse colon as well as omental fat. 

Band atelectasis is noted in the posterior segment of the right upper lobe. No enlargement of the cardiac silhouette.

Case Discussion

CT Features are consistent with Morgagni hernia, which is considered one of the congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDH) and is characterised by herniation through the foramen of Morgagni.
