Myxoid liposarcoma of the body wall

Case contributed by Michael P Hartung
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Body wall mass.

Patient Data

Age: Adult
Gender: Female

Heterogeneous, oval mass with variable areas of fat density in the lower left abdominal/upper pelvic wall, predominantly within the subcutaneous tissues but with relatively broad contact of the lower rectus abdominis musculature. Axial image series is incomplete.

Case Discussion

Biopsy-proven myxoid liposarcoma of the body wall. The fact that the mass is predominantly soft tissue density and within the body wall raises the concern of either a malignant mesenchymal mass or a benign desmoid tumor. The presence of at least some variable fat density can help favor a liposarcoma variant.
