Neurofibromatosis type 1 - with neurofibroma of lumbar spine

Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Presented with slowly progressive paraplegia of 8 months duration with loss of bladder control for last two months.

Patient Data

Gender: Male

Dumbell shaped multiple tumours (Neurofibromas) opposite T11, T12 and L1 vertebral bodies and extending through the neural foramina.

Case Discussion

MR study with contrast was done which showed uniform enhancement favouring the diagnosis of neurofibroma.

Location: spinal cord (Schwanomas occur more intracranially)

Number: multiple (Schwanomas occur more as single)

Contrast Enhancement: uniform (Schwanomas show peripheral enhancement) favours the diagnosis of neurofibroma.

Patient was consulted to have a genetic analysis study and referred to neurosurgery.
