Presentation

Tachypnea in recovery post left axillary clearance

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

There is evidence of left upper lobe collapse, evident by left hemidiaphragm elevation, ipsilateral rib crowding and a veiling left thoracic opacity. The right lung is spared. Subcutaneous emphysema and left axillary drain in keeping with known recent surgery.

2 hours post original CXR

x-ray

Re-expansion of the left upper lobe with normalization of the left hemidiaphragm and resolution of the left sided veiling opacity.

Left axillary post surgical changes again demonstrated.

Case Discussion

In the acute post operative setting, lung collapse may be caused by a mucus plug or bronchial intubation. The clinical team thought the former in this case.
