Small bowel neuroendocrine tumor with obstruction

Case contributed by Dr Matthew Lukies

Presentation

Central abdominal pain for four days with constipation

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

CT findings include:

  • small bowel obstruction with dilated small bowel measuring up to 3.2 cm
  • 2 x 2 cm solid high density / enhancing endoluminal nodule in the jejunum as a transition point
  • small volume of intra-abdominal free fluid
  • central mesenteric lymphadenopathy

Case Discussion

CT findings are consistent with small bowel obstruction due to small bowel tumor in the jejunum. The tumor in this case was shown to be a small bowel neuroendocrine tumor on pathological analysis after resection. This is in keeping with the high density / enhancing solid appearance on CT.
