Spina bifida with tethered cord and myelomeningocele

Presentation

Chronic urine retention due to neurogenic bladder. Bilateral lower limb weakness.

Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Male

Loss of posterior vertebral elements of the sacral vertebrae (spina bifida).

The spinal cord is reaching the level of S2-S3 level (tethered cord) ending with sac-like posterior herniation of the dural sac through the posterior neural arch defect containing dysplastic neurogenic and fibrous tissues.

The urinary bladder shows suprapubic cystostomy, enlarged size, irregular shape and diffuse thick wall. Wide prostatic urethra. Midline abdominal wall scar is seen, related to previous urinary bladder operations.
