Presentation
High fever, numbness and weakness in the legs, lower back pain and difficulty urinating. The patient denies contact with animals.
Patient Data
MRI results demonstrate a polycystic formation in the spinal canal and intervertebral foramina of the T9-L1 vertebrae with extension into the paravertebral soft tissues on the left. Cysts have an MR signal from simple fluid.
Cysts put pressure on the spinal cord. There is destruction of the T10 and T11 vertebrae and the posterior segments of the 10th and 11th ribs on the left.
The walls of some of the cysts slightly accumulate the contrast agent.
Case Discussion
A positive anti-Echinococcus IgG blood test was obtained with a positivity coefficient (PC) = 5.37 suggesting hydatid disease. Removal of hydatid cysts and decompressive and stabilising surgery on the spine were performed.
