Subdural haematoma - three ages of blood

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Head trauma. Reduced GCS.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

Bilateral posterior and left parafalcine subdural haematomas.

Three densities within each of the subdurals, including layering within the subdural haematomas.

The three densities represent three ages of blood, including hyperacute blood.

4 hours later

ct

No change in the size of the subdural haematomas.  However, the internal composition of the collections has changed after just 4 hours. 

Case Discussion

Three distinct attenuations are evident within the initial subdural haematoma with distinct layering, indicating 3 different ages of blood.
