Subsidence of the tibial component in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty

Case contributed by Domenico Nicoletti
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Severe anteromedial pain on weight-bearing, knee stiff, with difficulty achieving full extension eleven months after cementless unicompartmental knee prosthesis.

Patient Data

Gender: Female

Collapse of the tibial component into the cancellous bone with increased anterior slope. The femoral component is normal.

Case Discussion

There are multiple causes of medial tibial subsidence after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) such as the alignment of the components, poor bone quality, female sex, and obesity. Cortical coverage of the tibial plateau is essential to prevent the collapse of the tibial component.
