Presentation

Shortness of breath and right sided chest pain.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Large right sided pneumothorax with mediastinal shift. Also note widening of the intercostal spaces on the right. 

Heart size normal.  Left lung clear.

Aspiration of pneumothorax.

x-ray

Large right pneumothorax, but decreased in size since the aspiration with resolution of the mediastinal shift.

Heart size normal.  Left lung clear.

x-ray

Right pleural drain.

Large right sided pneumothorax.

Heart size normal.  Left lung clear.

x-ray

The right sided pneumothorax has further reduced in size.

Spontaneous tension pneumothorax in a young male with the subsequent immediate aspiration and then formal pleural drain insertion.
