Transient lateral patellar dislocation with chondral fracture

Presentation

Sport injury.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Bone contusion of the lateral femoral condyle and medial aspect of the patella with a chondral defect of the medial patellar facet. The detached cartilaginous fragment is displaced well-visualised in the medial aspect of the articular cavity. Joint effusion is noted. The medial patellar retinaculum is moderately thickened with no abnormal intrinsic signal or disruption seen.

No meniscal tear is seen. ACL and PCL are intact.

Small popliteal cyst is noted.

Case Discussion

Bone contusion of the lateral femoral condyle and medial aspect of the patella is most consistent with transient lateral dislocation of the patella complicated by chondral fracture.
