Presentation

Head trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

Non-contrast CT

There is no evidence of an intracranial bleed or any fracture. Right buccal contusion.

Status post: left frontoparietotemporal craniotomy. Left frontal and temporal pole encephalomalacia.

Fatty atrophy of the left temporalis, masseter, and medial and lateral pterygoid muscles.

Case Discussion

Incidental finding of unilateral fatty atrophy of the major muscles of mastication due to denervation of the motor fibers of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3).
