Presentation

Chest wall deformity. No respiratory symptoms.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Blurring of right heart border on the frontal view and depression of the lower sternum on the lateral view; these findings are consistent with pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum. Haller index measures 3.4. Rib cage and thoracic spine are intact. Lungs are clear. No pleural collection, pneumothorax or significant mediastinal lymphadenopathy is seen.

x-ray

Evidence of surgical correction of the pectus excavatum (Nuss procedure) is noted. Nuss bar is seen in place.

Case Discussion

Moderate pectus excavatum with Haller index of 3.4. Normal chest has a Hallar index of <2.0.

Pectus excavatum with Haller index ≥3.25 can be treated by Nuss procedure (also known as MIRPE- minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum).
