The humeral head is dislocated anteriorly and inferiorly with the anteroinferior margin of the glenoid, with some flattening of the corresponding part of the humerus.

Q: What is the diagnosis? show answer
A: Anterior shoulder dislocation.
Q: What resultant humeral injury is most likely also present? show answer
A: Hill-Sachs lesion (a compression fracture of the humeral head as it comes forcibly in contact with the glenoid rim).
Q: What directions can the shoulder dislocate in, and which is most common? show answer
A: Anterior : > 95 %; Posterior : 2 - 4 %; Inferior (luxatio erecta) : < 1 %.
Q: How are these treated? show answer
A: Closed reduction,followed by a period of immobilisation; 3 weeks for younger patients (< 30 years old, who have a very high rate of recurrence) and 7 - 10 days in older patients.
