Tethered cord

Case contributed by Dr Arthur Daire

Known patient with myelomeningocoele, which was surgically repaired. Weakness of lower limbs and incontinence.

Patient Data

Age: 13 years

The conus is low lying, almost at L5/S1 level, consistent with tethered cord. No evidence of filum lipoma.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrated a late diagnosis of tethered cord. Early imaging would have established the diagnosis, allowing a surgical procedure prior to the symptoms developing.
