Body
was changed:
The sublingual space is one of the suprahyoid deep spaces of the head and neck.
Gross anatomy
It is like an inverted V with its apex pointing anteriorly and is located between:
- tongue musculature superiorly
- and the anterior one-third of the mylohyoid muscle inferolaterally which separates it from submandibular space
Boundaries
Posteriorly, the sublingual space is not encapsulated by any fascial layer and it freely communicates along the posterior free border of the mylohyoid muscle with the submandibular and parapharyngeal spaces.
Anteriorly, the two sublingual spaces are communicating via a small isthmus just below the frenulum
- medial border: geniohyoid
/genioglossus/genioglossus complex - lateral border: mylohyoid muscle
- anterior border (apex): mandible
- superior border: floor of mouth and intrinsic muscles of the tongue
