Inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery

Last revised by Daniel MacManus on 7 Jun 2024

The inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery is the first branch of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA).

It usually arises at the inferior border of the pancreas or with the first jejunal artery as part of the pancreaticoduodenojejunal trunk.

It anastomoses with branches of the superior pancreaticoduodenal artery (from the gastroduodenal artery) to form the pancreaticoduodenal arcade. It supplies the head of the pancreas and the duodenum distal to the ampulla of Vater.
