Technetium agents based on the Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) radioisotope are frequently used agent in medical imaging. The radioactive technetium can be chelated to a number of different compounds to create specific radiopharmaceuticals and optimise imaging of various structures:

  • Tc-99m ECD (ethyl cysteinate dimer) and Tc-99m HMPAO: CNS imaging
  • Tc-99 GHA : Brain tumors (low-grade glioma)

    • Meckel scan : for Meckel's diverticulum
    • testicletesticular scan imaging: Rule out torsion Vs acute epididymo-orchitis
    • in dual phase parathyroid substraction imaging : for distinguishing from thyroid gland
    • Tc-99m labeled with sulfur colloid used in gastric emptying studies, intestinal and rectal functional studies
  • Tc-99m MDP: bone imaging  Bone scans in wholebody onclogical/non-oncological conditions 
  • Tc-99m MAA: lung perfusion imaging and Tc-99 DTPA (aerosol)  for lung ventilation (as part of ventilation perfusion scintigraphy) to rule out Pulmonary embolism
  • Tc-99m teboroxime: cardiac imaging

    • assessment of occult gastrointestinal haemorrhage
    • assessment of vascular lesions, e.g. hepatic haemangioma
    • assessment of cardiac function, first pass or equilibrium
  • 99mTc labeled heat-denatured RBC: specific splenic assessment, gold-standard in splenosis
  • Tc-99m MAG3: Tubular renal imaging agent. Measures ERPF
  • Tc-99m DMSA: renal  Renal cortical imaging for assessment of acute pyelonephritis, parenchymal studiescortical scarring, ectopic kidney 
  • Tc-99m DTPA: Glomerular renal imaging agent, measures camera based glomerular filtration ratio
  • Tc-99m DTPA (aerosol (GFR) by Gates method. Another method is plasma sample method (cumbersome but reliable): lung ventilation imaging, bronchial clearance
