Gene and protein notation

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 9 Jan 2025

Radiopaedia follows the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee guidelines 1 on gene and protein notation.

In concordance with these guidelines, gene symbols are italicized on Radiopaedia. Still, when the full name of a gene is used, it is to be in standard font, i.e. not italicized. Conversely, protein symbols are to remain in a standard font, as are protein names. For example:

  • AHDS is the symbol for the "Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome gene".

  • AHDS is the symbol for the "Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome protein", as expressed by the AHDS gene.

NB This is one of the few occasions on Radiopaedia where using italics is encouraged. If in doubt, do not use them.
