- Superficial perineal pouches
The superficial perineal pouch is an anatomic space below the perineal membrane in the urogenital triangle of the perineum.
Gross anatomy
The superficial perineal pouch is inferior (superficial) to the perineal membrane in the urogenital triangle, anterior to the transverse line between the ischial tuberosities.
Boundaries
- roof: perineal membrane
- floor: superficial perineal fascia (Colles' fascia)
- Colles' fascia attaches to the posterior border of the perineal membrane posteriorly and to the pubic arch laterally
- communicates with Scarpa's fascia of the anterior abdominal wall anteriorly
Contents
Males
- bulbospongiosus muscle which covers the corpus spongiosum and surrounds the urethra
- paired ischiocavernosus muscles which cover the corpora cavernosa of the penis
- paired superficial transverse perineal muscles
- crura of penis
- bulb of penis
Females
- greater vestibular glands (Bartholin glands)
- bulbospongiosus muscle: separated by the urethra and vagina in the midline and covers the bulb of the vestibule
- paired ischiocavernosus muscles: tenses the vagina during orgasm
- perineal body
- paired superficial transverse perineal muscles
- crura of the clitoris
