Summary
origin: larger terminal division of the tibial nerve
course: from its origin under the flexor retinaculum, it passes deep to the proximal attachment of abductor hallucis before appearing between it and the flexor digitorum brevis. It immediately gives off a medial proper digital nerve to the hallux, and divides near the metatarsal bases into three common plantar digital nerves
motor supply: four intrinsic muscles - abductor hallucis, flexor digitorum brevis, flexor hallucis brevis, and first lumbrical
sensory supply: skin on anteromedial two-thirds of the sole and adjacent surfaces of the medial three and one-half toes, which includes the great toe
